SOC 350 The veil Race (sumblog 9-24-2013 #2)

For this week the idea that really hit me was that there are veils we have in society. The veils keep us from seeing things clearly but once we remove them we are so blinded by the full understanding we are in a dazzled state. It's my goal to try and remove one of the veils that I think gets in the way a lot because we just got so used to it that we didn't remove it or think about it. So first I am going to try and put you in the mind set. Look in a mirror  You see yourself right?...I hope so. But moving on what race are you? Now think of why you said that race. Was it based on your looks or color? What if I said look at your clothing what race are you then? What if I somehow change what you see to just be in black in white then what are you? Each time I take out the source of what you use to place yourself in a race it get harder to place yourself. The link below will give you some fast info about race.

I think race leads to social classes in a way I know for myself I want to believe that I hold everyone at an equal standard. I thought that I was until a few days ago. I has someone say something in a class I was in that made me see things in a new way. Even if we do not say things out loud we still look at someone and say in our mind what we think they are and that plays into how we think they are. When in fact that most times it is not the case. Even by  doing it in our heads we are being rude in a way that I didn't understand till now. I want to reach my human potential. Right now with the veils in my way I do not feel like I am reaching that potential. I have so many questions about things now. Does race lead to racism?
If America is a melting pot of nations then would the bounds of race be ruled out. When taking a test should everyone mark other? How is the race important to the test? Does it matter what race you are? Could we not just use ethnicity instead? Ethnicity is for cultural heritage where race is for biological differences. But in todays world the biological differences have been so crossed that they do not apply and many to most cases. So my biggest question is if race is not the correct term any more and it might lead to racism then should we still teach it in schools? Or is it like materialism for humans today? Have we become so accustomed to it like engagement rights that we forget why we do it in the first place?

  1. I really enjoyed reading your ideas on the "veils" of society. I found it interesting that you used race as one of your veils. These are definitely things that I have thought about myself. I have often wondered that maybe if we stopped make race the center of so many discussions, that maybe it would give our country time to heal, instead of simply reminding us that we are "different". I also liked how you brought into question why we do not use ethnicity instead of race, which does indeed seem puzzling. Maybe it is true that we get so accustomed to thinking a certain way that we don't challenge things as much as we should. The only question I had while reading this is what you meant by the question "...should we still teach it in schools today?" I wasn't sure if you meant teaching what racism is, or continuing to bring up race in terms of testing and so forth. Regardless, great entry!
