SOC 350 #12 where I think we are....maybe 12-3-2013

I have to say that I was really having a hard time keep the ideas of modern and postmodern separate in my mind. So I thought that this image helped a bit and getting the basic ideas down. I would have to say for me I think we are a modern still but we have started to see points of postmodern. I feel this way over the fact that with today and all the innovations we have made in technology has been outstanding. Yet, even with all that there are still things that we like over look and do not do anything about. For example the Ecuadorian Tribes VS Oil Company. We could really do so much more in my mind then we are to help this is a large environmental issues. Yet day after day and year after year we just let it go yet smaller problems we notices everyday. I think we get so use to only dealing with the that are right in front of us. That we get so use to being connected to everything on a technological advice, that we don't look at the non technological devices for what's going on in the world. With being a global network system we get so much info that we so in touch with everything we can not have the hope to really notice all the big things when we are too busy taking in all the small things. Or is it that we are so use to doing things on the web that when it comes to really doing something physically like holding a protest in from of a building or so forth that we just look a lack of interesting in having do so. I might be wrong it just interest me thinking that depending on what one we are in modern or postmodern that it might make a different on the things we do and focus are attention onto.

  1. Good overview of the idea of modern and postmodern societies. I think that the picture that you chose gives a good visual image to show how societies have changed over time. I agree with you that we have become so connected to technology that we lose sight of how things used to be, and we become disconnected from society in some sense. Overall, great application of Giddens' theory.

  2. Interesting post! I like the picture that you chose. The ideas of modernity and post modernity can be confusing, but the picture can help to clarify that. Through our connections with technology, we often disconnect, which you mention. Good post, and good application!

  3. Good choice on the photo. It helped clear things up a little bit for me.

I think our over-reliance on technology is a definite mark of us living in a postmodern society. Although I would have to disagree that we are letting environmental problems slide nowadays. Our increased access to technology and social media has created one more outlet for people to voice their opinions and start movements around important issues like that. That in and of itself is a positive.
