SOC 350 #12 where I think we are....maybe 12-3-2013
I have to say that I was really having a hard time keep the ideas of modern and postmodern separate in my mind. So I thought that this image helped a bit and getting the basic ideas down. I would have to say for me I think we are a modern still but we have started to see points of postmodern. I feel this way over the fact that with today and all the innovations we have made in technology has been outstanding. Yet, even with all that there are still things that we like over look and do not do anything about. For example the Ecuadorian Tribes VS Oil Company. We could really do so much more in my mind then we are to help this is a large environmental issues. Yet day after day and year after year we just let it go yet smaller problems we notices everyday. I think we get so use to only dealing with the that are right in front of us. That we get so use to being connected to everything on a technological advice, that we don't look at the non technological devices for what's going on in the world. With being a global network system we get so much info that we so in touch with everything we can not have the hope to really notice all the big things when we are too busy taking in all the small things. Or is it that we are so use to doing things on the web that when it comes to really doing something physically like holding a protest in from of a building or so forth that we just look a lack of interesting in having do so. I might be wrong it just interest me thinking that depending on what one we are in modern or postmodern that it might make a different on the things we do and focus are attention onto.

soc 350 #11 11-26-2013 How you look at it...
I refure to the video you can find the full video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6niWzomA_So
I was really interested by the movie we watched and the idea that so many people want to help other people yet they do not really see all that they do. I mean that I understand that at times there are going to be pains for the change yet I think a lot of the time. Or at least part of the time we don't think any one that leaves in a level lower then what we do is okay. If most of use where to go to a small village and have no electronic that we are use to. Then to add on the idea that being a farmer or a factory job. We then for some reason believe that we are helping people when we go in and change the way they live to match a western way of life. Thinking of this recalled me of a video that I watched in anthropology class a few week’s ago called Cannibal tour’s. I might be a bit cynical bout it and I feel bad about that but it upsets. I wish with all the advances in globalization that then the world could work in a more productive way with each other. To me it is not about going in and changing things to the way I do them. I feel that they should be done the way the people the changes are made for want them done. It is no me that has to deal with the everyday to day life problems that I create most times it is them. It upsets me that I feel so many times people feel that they are helping when in fact it is a ploy with a hidden agenda to change the playing field so that others with more power can keep getting power and more the game in the way they want. I used to video I did for the fact that I though it went really well with the idea of playing the game to have the game go in your favor. Yet the other players just go with it and there is nothing they can do. For example there is the a part in the video about playing a game and one player starts off with double the money to start and they get double every time they get payed. Even though there is nothing different between the players the one with the game in there favor stats to act in a way to view its self as better then the other player. Even when it is just a game so imagine the thinking there is in real life.

soc 350 scared straight 11-19-2013 #10
I happened to come upon the show scared straight and had to ask myself it really worked. So I though of if it did not work why it would still be used. So I came up to that the show was a dram and being a dram people like to watch that and feel the dram and not see it. Also the popularity of the show on TLC helps to pay for the show and keep it going. It also might even make people want to do bad things more so that they can rebail against the show. It might also have kids doing bad things just in the hopes of getting on to the show. This made me think of do they have any way of stopping this reaction to the show. I could not think of any way the show would stop this or get around it. I know for another highly popular show called Ridicules on TMZ deals with this problem by saying they will not use the mail they get of people sending stuff to them.
This idea that some people would go far off the normal path to do what they want that maybe that then affects the other half of the people on the normal need that are trying to reach the goals that society sets. That by the one side being pushed so much if it would then make the other side then have to shift just a bit to deal with them. Like the game “World Of Goo” the fact that when you build something it has to balance its self out after so long or it will type over. This it leads to the problem that that is a game and the player of the game places the goo where they need to be so what makes the people go to ether side in society to help balance this scale so it does not fall over in deviance. I could list that some do it as seeing as it the easy way out of problems they face for others it is wrong so the go working harder to reach the goals they want. There are also the other people in society that have there own reasons for going what they want when they want. It might be as simple as they want to try it or as complex as they had tons of things happen in there life which lead them into thinking that they should try something different from the normal ideas of society.

soc 350 #9 self label
![]() |
Emma Watson |

Cheryl Reichling |
I like to think that the individual has
more control of how others view people. It goes even farther then I
talked of last time and the words you say and how that is filtered
out. It also feel that in that since that it is shown out then how
you would even look and that would be a self label in a since. That
actors dress up and they way they feel would be right to there role
that they are playing. But most people have more then one role that
they must play in one day. That does not mean that we can just change
hats so to say and that is what makes us feel a different role. Or do
we mix in a since or all are hats into what we do everyday. Where if
we have a role to be a student, worker, and girlfriend. Could we not
then at times in a since add in what we learn and how a student looks
or a audience thinks they look then to add that being a worker wail
at school. I think this has to do that we are in many plays and drams
that if so for anyone that knows about this it is really hard to
change form one costume to another and as such props and stage back
drops are changed to show the difference in the characters even
though it is the same person in each seam. It is like a one woman
show. For a example to look at this and give it a case.
Emma Watson
The roles
- She is a sister and part of a family
- She is a actress
- She is a student
The list could really just go on and one but those are just a few examples. Then with all the roles at times in I think in her mind and daily life all the roles start to be put together. Its like the idea of the melting pot and stew. It might start out as a stew and others can view it as a stew but for the individual after so long I feel the parts in the stew melt and become a melting pot even if it does not seam to be that way to others. With that being said at times when they try to act in away that makes other people see stigma with it. For example for Emma it would be wanting to go to a public college. Even though she has all this money and no need to go to a public one where she should face so many people with other students. Yet it fit to her self label wanting to be a normal girl for once after working for so long.
SOC 350 #8 mirror, mirror on the way tell me who I am....
I
thought it was really I treating to learn about double self. It made
me really interesting to know that everyone has filters and that
society makes them. It just made me wonder then why some people so
close to us that should have the same filter have a very different
one. If there was a filter for personal feelings that added things or
took them away when talking. For example the film clip we watched in
class. What if not only knowing he was braking the society filter
with knowing he know what was wrong to say but then also adding
things from his personal filter to the things he is saying. So the
things he is saying are not only things he thinks society feels but
his own personal feelings. It would be interesting to know if one
could see hat filter is used more in someone the society or personal
feelings. It also interesting to see what one you use changes with
how you are with on knowing how they would act to what you say or the
actions you take based on that. It makes me wonder the. If maybe
there is just two. That maybe we are all looking in a mirror that has been shaded and then put back together an then in each
small piece is a filter with a person or group. I wonder
if that's ever been though off in that way or if I'm lost and
thinking about the theory to much. But would it not be interesting if
we could be able to see that and know that this one group is a part
of us and how we react to things even when we loss them or they are
there. Like the way old friends that maybe where mean to me still
affect the way that I act to other friends even after I have cut
times with them.

Soc 350 #7 Tell me I'm wrong...10-29-2013
I guess I had a hard time understand Cooper's ideas. I know that I am a stubborn and at times fierce person. If I do something wrong how could I now if no one blamed me for and told me. If I and other people train me and myself but I pick how to follow and what group to be with. Then I am a form of power. Am I not? As a power should I not be held accountable for my actions. If I am never corrected and told I am a influential person that holds power how can I make sure that I use my power in the right way. I picked the song "Hero" by Superchick for the fact I thought the song played really well into my idea. I know for me being a big sister that it is important for me to be open and now how I affect my younger sister. For example in the song the following lyrics play.
"No one talks to him about how he lives
He thinks that the choices he makes are just his
Doesn't know he's the leader with the way he behaves
And others will follow the choices he's made
He lives on the edge, he's old enough to decide
His brother who wants to be him is just nine
He can do what he wants because it's his right
The choices he makes change a nine-year-old's life"
I think most people can see that they have faults and accept the idea today that they play into how the act and do things. For me though maybe its a fault but I cannot help but feel that I need to hold people accountable to there actions. I am not saying that it should be carried out in the harshest way. I understand that its hard to see and to stop from something people are so use to. But should they not at least be told when possible that what they are doing is wrong. Even at times if it is harsh. I believe at times being harsh is the only way to make some people see things. For a example to elaborate. I love my grandfather that being said he drives me crazy. He believes I should become a dentist that speaks Spanish then I would always have a job. He can at times be judgmental and bias to the ways he grow up. Yet though all that I still love him and forgive him. Yet the one place I cannot seem to let things go is him smoking. He has done it for more then half his life. So I understand its hard and he has tried to stop but he goes back and to me that is giving up and being weak on his part of something I now he can do. I know he wants to stop and he wants to live a longer life to see me reach dreams and goals that he wants to see. So is it be being wrong when I accept that its hard yet still lock him out of his own house for a few minutes because I told him not to go outside and smoke? Even if it was just a joke. Should I accept that he won't ever stop smoking and I should come to terms with that and not blame him.

SOC 350 #5 Measuring success
How do you measure success Is it by how much money you have. What type of grades you get. Do you pay more attention to in innerworld success or outerworld success
Why do we measure are self. Is it for the fact that we want to know how good we are doing. We grow up being told to be good. It might even be culturally passed on to us to compare ourselves to others. I'm school we strive to get grade knowing that means we are doing good. But is it really good. It's just a teacher grading papers on what they view or how much we understand a idea. Would it not be better I we could just focus in being happy. To get rid of the anomalous that are in the way. Should we not just be happy and base if off are values of things. For me I would rather say if I am happy or not off what I think happy is not what others tell me it is or should be. What are they to say that I have succeeded at nothing? I might not get good grades on papers but that does not mean I don't understand or I am bad at it. It might just be the fact that I have very bad spelling or the person grading the papers does not agree with my ideas or theories.I feel if you are happy with what you have done and you can at least make it on your own your doing good. Even at times if you can not make it on your own does not mean you have failed it just means that in some part or way you need help in a are for now. So I want to pose a challenge to you. I want you to really think of what you base your success on and if that's the best thing to base it off of.

Soc 350 (Sumblog Disconnect to Reconnect #4) 10-8-2013
For
me this week I was really interested and the way that we are so
connected. I really like that we are all connected and how this is a
good thing for us. At the same time though I think that it
disconnects us.We are not focused in on one small group of people we
are connecting to a large group. I think that we cannot focus on the
small group for the fact that we are so caught up in wanting to be a
part of the large group. We forget to take the time to stay connected
with the small group that is with us. We are so determined to be a
part of the global community to have the most people to talk to and
know about. I feel that at least for me its like collecting coal when
you think they are diamonds. But the true friends that are diamonds
you end up not being able to keep. It makes me sad to think that this
takes place so many times to so many people. The video that I have
posted above I though of is for the point of how we affect the ones
around us. We are all connected and then the fact that with one idea
things can change. Things will only change though if you or I are
willing to act upon the idea to be the odd one out and stay true to
that idea. For me I fallowed this idea by not having a facebook. So I
hope that you will fallow through on what you think should be
different as well. That if that’s with not having a facebook or
getting out more and being social. Then I hope you will take the
shoot to do it.

SOC 350 The veil Race (sumblog 9-24-2013 #2)
For this week the idea that really hit me was that there are veils we have in society. The veils keep us from seeing things clearly but once we remove them we are so blinded by the full understanding we are in a dazzled state. It's my goal to try and remove one of the veils that I think gets in the way a lot because we just got so used to it that we didn't remove it or think about it. So first I am going to try and put you in the mind set. Look in a mirror You see yourself right?...I hope so. But moving on what race are you? Now think of why you said that race. Was it based on your looks or color? What if I said look at your clothing what race are you then? What if I somehow change what you see to just be in black in white then what are you? Each time I take out the source of what you use to place yourself in a race it get harder to place yourself. The link below will give you some fast info about race.

SOC 350 Materialism ( Sunblog 9-17-2013)
"Democracy favors the taste of physical pleasures. This taste, if it becomes excessive, soon disposes men to believe that nothing but matter exists."(Tocqueville, 1835-40/1969:544). I was really interested in this idea. I guess that maybe my background or own ideas keeps me for needing so many material items. I feel like after know Tocqueville's idea about material's that I would like to know more about how to do more with less. Even after all that though I don't think it will ever get rid of the serotonin rush that I get after I go shopping or getting something I have really wanted. I did not like Tocqueville's theory for the fact that he seemed to just blame democracy for the problem. Where I personally feel that no one things can be blamed for materialism. I think that it is a complicated web of a bunch of different groups that play into so many people and groups being more material based than others. I think the Theory still holds true to today maybe not in the same way as it was before but it still holds it's place in society today. We wait in lines for so long just to get a new game or phone but really have we ever thought of why we do this? We could wait just a few months or a year and it would maybe cost less and then we would have time to really think about if we want it or not. I think we act like little kids at christmas time we can't so many things and we like having so much yet after we get it we hardly use it. I mean just think of how many electronic devices do we have in our room? The Ipods, computers, Tv's, cell phones, Nooks, cameras.... They all add up. when will we fill we have filled our need for things? Maybe we have to find something more meaningful to fill it with like love, friends and hobbies. I think it would be nice to live in a world where everyone does not take more than they need that at least everyone has the basics. So next time we plan to pre order something or stand in line for something for so long ask why we our doing this. Maybe something more meaningful could be done that would give a material item to someone that really needs it like food or clothing.http://rsrc.psychologytoday.com/files/imagecache/article-inline-half/blogs/2558/2012/03/90783-87029.jpg
